Vinyl Flight Night Halloween and Punk Show at Triple Crossing Brewing

vinylflightnightme

The following is a partial list of records and songs I will be spinning on October 30th at Triple Crossing Brewing for Vinyl Flight Night. For fun this is in absolutely no particular play order and some songs may be added or taken away for spontaneity and time!

Enjoy!  Thanks to Shaun Wood from Vinyl Flight Night and Adam as well as everyone from Triple Crossing for allowing me to spin some punk records and hopefully enlighten and  quite possibly offend some people. Cheers!

Also go out and support your local record shop. In this case i’d like to thank Steady Sounds, Vinyl Conflict and Plan 9 all here in Richmond Virginia.

La URSS: Sonidos De Un Derrumble

Viejas Armas, Nuevas Guerras (New Wars, Old Weapons) 2. Ciudades (Cities)

Note: La URSS loosely translates to “The USSR.” Although i’m not quite sure where this fits here. Anyway, this Spanish punk band came through and played Richmond early April 2016 at 25 Watt. Their performance was ripping, animated and some great fast and loud tunes. I bought this record off the singer after the show.

Purchase: Grave Mistake Records: La URSS

The Dickies: Hideous 10″ Maxi White Promo

1.Hideous 2. You Drive Me Ape (You Big Gorilla)

Note: Picked this up at Steady Sounds in Richmond Virginia for cheap. Sleeve’s thrashed, but still kind of held together. Anyway I love the Dickies and this record.

The Clash: Give Em Enough Rope

1. Guns on the Roof 2. Drug Stabbing Time 3. Stay Free

Note: There’s no denying what the Clash did for punk rock in England. This record being the Clash’s second studio album and with some great tracks like “Guns on the Roof” about Paul Simon and Topper Headon shooting birds on the roof of the Clash’s rehearsal studio.

Various Artists: Yes L.A.

1. The Bags-We Don’t Need The English 2. Eyes-Disneyland 3. The Alley Cat’s-Too Much Junk 4. Black Randy and the Metrosquad-Down at the Laundrymat 5. X-Los Angeles 6. The Germs-No God

Note: What a record documenting some of the early Los Angeles punk scene.

r-581821-1189447988-jpeg

The Germs: Lion’s Share

3. Now I Hear The Laughter 4. Going Down 5. Lion’s Share

Note: The Germs are one of my favorite punk bands. I’ve always dreamed of seeing a live performance from this band, no matter bad they were live, it was historic and downright in-your-face. This bootleg record includes the sessions they recorded for the “Cruising” soundtrack, the film only used ‘Lions Share’ during the credits. The B side to this record chronicles their last show at the Starwood in Los Angeles on December 3rd 1980, Darby Crash would be pronounced dead of an intentional heroin overdose on December 7th 1980.

r-2165302-1327626853-jpeg

The Partisans: S/T

1. Never Needed You 2. I Don’t Give a Fuck 3. Mindless Violence

Note: The Partisans were an English street punk band formed in early ’78. This release followed up to the successful splash of the ’81 release of “Police Story.” This ’83 self-titled release on No Future Records would collect the ferocity of those recordings akin to Police Story.

r-3379002-1328063960-jpeg

OFF!: Live From the BBC 10″ RSD 2015. 5,000 Pressed.

1. Void You Out 2. Red White and Black 3. Over Our Heads

Note: The supergroup that eventually turned into OFF! was because of a conflict between Circle Jerks members Keith Morris and Greg Hetson. Both members wanted wanted to take the next Circle Jerks record a different way. Keith and Dimitri Coat’s who was set to produce the record wrote several songs which they used to start OFF!, OFF! for me carries off where the Morris era of Black Flag left off.

The Misfits Earth A.D./ Wolf’s Blood  Run-time 21:09

Tracks: TBA

Note: The second full-length album from horror punks Misfits. Earth A.D is the last record before the band’s split and Glenn Danzig’s departure from the group. This record is definitely faster and more hardcore punk than some other releases from the group and is propelled by Robo’s druming, who is one of my favorite punk rock drummers.

r-442301-1471332643-3613-jpeg

The Dils: Class War

I Hate The Rick 2. You’re Not Blank

Note: Great punk band from the very first wave of LA Punk! Tonight’s tracks we will hear both sides from their first single on What? Records.

r-2726608-1298266437-jpeg

7 Seconds: Walk Together, Rock Together

2.We’re Going to Fight 3. In Your Face 4. Spread 5. 99 Red Balloons.

Note: “Walk Together, Rock Together” is Reno, Nevada punk rockers 7 Seconds third studio album (’85). 7 Seconds is noted as reflecting on more positive ideals and this album certainly shows it. Front cover artwork by Pushead.

r-399739-1371467442-4223-jpeg

Blatz: The Shit Split “A Touch of Blatz”

Berkeley Is My Baby (And I Wanna Kill It) 5. Cockroach Cafe 6. California 7. Dolly.

Note: Blatz is loud, pissed, raucous and awesome. Interesting side note, Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day would sit in on guitar sometimes at live gigs. Or something like that. Anyway great songs! I love this Shit Split Record. Happy Alternative Tentacles hit this record with a repress.

r-1444387-1333477066-jpeg

Filth: The Shit Split, B Side “Destroy Everything”

You Are Shit 3. Night of Rage 4. Filth

Great tracks from Filth. More on the crusty/hardcore type of punk especially with the vocals. I couldn’t imagine singing like Jake Sayles for more than 10 seconds. Great hardcore punk from the Bay Area.

r-1444387-1227793588-jpeg

Black Flag: The First Four Years

1.Wasted 2.Revenge 3.No Values

Note: This compilation record captures Black Flag’s pre Rollins era with Keith Morris, Ron Reyes, Dez Cadena and other early members.

r-1575356-1381299415-8641-jpeg

The Nips ‘n’ Nipple Erectors: “Bops, Babes, Booze and Bovver”

Nervous Wreck, So Pissed Off, Stavordale Rd N5

Note: Before Shane MacGowan was frontman for The Pogues, he was belting out vocals for the Nipple Erectors. Formed in 77 and hammering out some great garage punk.

I started this blog on May 2 2012 with an intent to write more and learn more and i have done just that. My posts will stay up but they will be at the WordPress site. I wanna thank the people that have shown support, love and help with my work. #ChaseCraftBeer signing off.

Growlers To Go Visits Richmonds Beer, Bourbon and BBQ Fest

The Beer, Bourbon and BBQ festival held at the Richmond International Raceway brought out craft enthusiasts to imbibe and enjoy some grog. I have been to craft beer festivals that have BBQ, which is already a winning formula. But I have never been to a ‘mixed’ festival that adds in some bourbon, assorted whiskey styles, moonshine and other spirits. Now that you have my full attention and my liver quivering, I was very excited to experience this festival.

We arrive at the raceway just before one and make our way into the festival. We were handed a map of the large indoor space and it was arrayed with stations to help you find exactly what you’re looking for and find it quickly and easily. This booze fest is not for the faint hearted or light weight, it takes a lot of food, water, and pacing for maximum enjoyment without becoming sick.

I quickly scurry to the closest beer station, Heavy Seas Brewing out of Baltimore and order the Cross Bones (Session IPA.) I sip and enjoy the delicate hop profile with a nice easy bitterness. I enjoy a few more beers from Heavy Seas and Smartmouth before sipping on some local moonshine out of Culpepper Virginia called Climax.

Adjacent to the entrance was a small 40 seat tasting theater, that also had tastings and talks from industry smarts while a separate live stage provided tunes from ‘Trial by Fire’ a tribute to Journey. Also a Beer Belly Contest with belly boasting, A ladies ‘classy drinking’ contest, corn-hole, pig races and much much more. Lots of indoor seating to sit and eat some of the delicious BBQ provided by Buzz and Ned’s, The Halligan Bar and Grill, and other great restaurants.

Later I step outside and enjoy the cigar I bought from Cortez Cigars, and bask in the sunshine. While it was a warm day, scattered clouds would roll through with a nice breeze that would blow through the area. I relish my Alter Ego Saison with my stogie. Outside people were enjoying playing cornhole, watching pig races and sit under a covered area. A few drinking stations were outside as well which made it convenient to enjoy my cigar and still get served before heading back inside.

PHOTO’S MISSING 😦
Wherever you turned you would see smiles, drunken giggles, funny costumes, and maybe someone who drank a little too much. Either way, the excitement of the festival was contagious and with water for drinking and rinsing out glasses and plenty of security around making sure everyone was safe and well behaved. It was hard to not enjoy the festivities, unless you had a few to many. Right now the Beer, Bourbon and BBQ festival is on tour and may be headed to a town near you. A Rant on the RVA Beer Scene

With the influx of attention on Virginia figuring out how Stone is going to affect the local beer demographic. A lot is discussed with how it will damage or build up the existing craft beer scene. With restaurants, bars, pubs, breweries, and even growler filling bars on the rise in the state. It makes me wonder how Stone will stir the pot or be ready to serve.

What a lot of people don’t realize about Stone is that they do a lot for their local community in San Diego. Holding regular events and benefits to local charity organizations that strengthen bonds with Stone and that charity. Virginia and specifically Richmond gives back a lot and often to its community. I feel the welcoming and friendly nature of it’s people and the feeling is infectious. I know Stone won’t mess it up, but I do feel why a lot of people are griping about it.

Let’s get back to the beer. I’ve noticed a lot about the beer scene here that is really unique.

Brewery Beer and Bottle Releases: For the last few months (and it shows no signs of stopping), local breweries are releasing new beers to the public. Some barrel aged, collaboration, a sour, a variant of a local favorite, or just because the locals love a new beer to get excited about. Sometimes these events fall on the same day. Too much good local beer isn’t a bad thing right?

Music loves Beer: Every local brewery has live music, usually on the weekends. But when you aren’t bobbing your head to the infectious groove of a local band, it’s probably a band on tour and passing through the river city. There’s a lot to love when you discover a great band and you have a hand crafted brew in your hand.

Local markets and Beer: The small local markets and grocers in Richmond are stock full of great local beers. Some of these markets also serve beer onsite, six packs and bottles to go, and also provide growler fills. Another way to bring home a great beer without having to go to the bar or the brewery. The keyword here is convenience.

Bars and Restaurants: Well besides the fact that these places serve local craft beer and amazing dishes. Richmond neighborhood bars and restaurants are making waves by stepping up their craft beer serving. I believe Mekong played a vital role in this re-invigoration to local craft beer focused bars that are popping up all over the state.

There is a lot going on here and Virginia will most certainly be a craft beer hub coming in the next few years and people from around the United States will see Richmond and Virginia’s economic craft beer growth. Just watch!

Get to Know a Style: Irish Red Ale

In light of the upcoming drunken holiday St. Patrick’s Day, I thought I would talk about a style often ignored by the holiday. Only seemed to be seen all but to briefly this time of year. I’m talking about the Irish Red Ale. Let’s peer into the style and learn more about it.

Malty. Irish Red ales are notably malt forward with some toasty, caramel flavor. Toffee is also acceptable.

Also showing depth of color ranging from a beautiful amber to a deep reddish color. Like the red of a well worn leather book sitting on a home library shelf.

A photo posted by thirdshift3 (@thirdshift3) on Oct 25, 2014 at 3:25pm PDT

Like that. The color and appearance of Irish Red ales should be captivating and bold. It should grab your attention and pull you in your next olfactory sense. Your nose, that gives the beer a whiff and deciphers what will soon be on your palette. I personally enjoy Karl Strauss’ Irish Red Ale “Red Trolley” as well as a few other American craft brewed examples. O’Hara’s Irish red ale is also a popular choice for the festivities around St. Patty’s.

Now for another fun part. The taste! Everyone perceives taste’s and flavors differently.

Full malt blast in front followed by some caramel and sometimes a copper flavor can be perceived and savored. A very slight hint of bitterness should be on the palate without lingering or overwhelming. Overall a highly drinkable red ale that can be savored year round, as part of a lot of breweries core beers offered. It’s a great beer to understand some of the complexities of other similar beer styles like ESB, Porter, or Irish Dry Stout.

So beer drinkers. Let me know of your favorite Irish Red Ale in the comments below.
Cheers to Happy and Safe Drinking!

Despot Day: A Worthy Attempt

When we arrived at the farm to a long line of cars, muddy roads, and an even longer line of people. I have to admit I started losing hope. Especially watching people walk away with cases of Enlightened Despot and four packs of the variants offered that day. I begin to think to myself… Well not everyone is going to buy a case right? If everyone walks away with a case, there’s no way this is going to last. I start figuratively kicking myself and wishing I just got up and got here earlier in the morning. end selfless gimme gimme rant

Either way, I was going to stick around and make the best of the day. This was my first visit to Lickinghole Creek and it sure won’t be my last. With beautiful natural surroundings and finely hand crafted beer it’s always a beautiful day to be at this farm brewery. So for those that are not familiar with Enlightened Despot i’ll let the folks at Lickinghole Creek explain for you.

The Enlightened Despot is an amazingly rich, complex and surprisingly drinkable Bourbon Barrel Russian Imperial Stout. Notes of chocolate, vanilla, and delicious Bourbon round out this robust stout. Aged for 8 months in the most premium Kentucky Bourbon Barrels available. The Enlightened Despot is made with 10 specialty grains and contains over 78 IBU of American Hop flavor. This truly is a one of a kind beer.

Intrigued? I know I was from hearing about this beer from my friends in the area. Which leads me to standing in soft brown-red mud staring at a long line that eventually reaches the brewery. I buy a few drink tickets and my lovely fiance secures our space in line. I kiss her on the cheek and I carefully step up to the brewery. With food vendors, photo booths, a playground for the kids, and a covered heated tent complete with a band there was a lot of fun to be had. I seize the opportunity to get myself a brew while having to wait in line. I order the Enlightened Despot and a Redneck Soap Opera.

I hoist my glass in the air and give a cheers to my friends nearby. I loved the aromas of oak, chocolate, and the hint of vanilla on the Despot. Flavors of rich chocolate entwined with oak and a very subtle bitterness that dissipates into a great body and mouthfeel. I loved it and it made sense to continue hope and stand in line to score a few bottles.

Throughout the day casks of Enlightened Despot went on to be tapped with special ingredients added. The few that I tried and I really enjoyed including the Coffee & Biscottii and the Mixed Berry. Glad to see this beer can have some versatility and mingle with so many flavors.

During this time of sampling and enjoying we have slowly been inching our way up the line. It didn’t matter at this point if I did or didn’t walk away with any bottles. I met up with some great friends, enjoyed some great beers, and had plenty of great conversations. I heard a lot of people had gripes with the line, line cutting, yada-yada. As those are concerns for future events. Everyone was laughing, playing, drinking and overall enjoying themselves. Smiles were on every face and a beer in every hand (of those over 21 of course.) I also enjoyed a fine cigar while on the farm and waiting for some Despot.

#DespotDay at @lccb_farmbrews I didn’t get any bottles, but I am enjoying a draft in this pic with a great cigar. A photo posted by Chase Dipple (@chasecraftbeer) on Mar 7, 2015 at 4:05pm PST

Chase Craft Beer Has Landed in Richmond!

These past few months have been quite a rodeo for this humble beer blogger. I would just like to thank everyone for reading and following me through this time. I have a lot of information to share with you!

For one I have now moved from Southern California to Richmond Virginia. I did a travel blog for our drive across the country, which was able to keep me busy and given some inspiration. As for my new location, I look forward to covering the beer scene out here and sharing it with you. I mentioned in a previous post about the breweries I visited and the fun I had when I visited here last summer. Since then Stone Brewing in San Diego has CONFIRMED Richmond to be their East Coast location. Green Flash has broken ground and will start construction of their VIRGINIA BEACH location. With more beer flowing and breweries being planned for the state with great bars and restaurants making an impact on the local market. Virginia is quickly becoming a craft beer hub.

I have visited a few breweries in the area already and look forward to compiling a full write up about them and their impact on the craft beer scene here. Breweries such as Hardywood Park and Strangeways are a few to be highlighted in their own posts as well as craft beer bars and restaurants will be included.

In the meantime I read and visit these local blogs and websites for my Virginia Craft Beer fix. VABeerTrail , Virginia Craft Beer Magazine , Richmond Beermeister , and Trinkin.

So stay tuned and I look forward to sharing my next post with you!
